Abstract
Cervical spondylotic myeolpathy(CSM) is not uncommon disease entity which leads serious disability if neglected or improperly. treated. There is still controversies in the treatment as which pateint can be operated on and which operation should
be
done.
We experienced 3 cases of severe CSM, all of them over 50 years old with long history of symptoms and with other associated medical problems. All cases were treated surgically by anterior decompression and fusion. Their mean recovery rate in
JOA(Japanese orthopedic association) score were 21%. There were grade 1 improvement in Nurick grading system postoperatively in all patients .One patient died 42 days after operative procedure with unknown cause. Moderate or severe myelopathy,
long
duration of operation and pre-existing pulmonary disease must be highly risk factors. Risk factors should be considered and evaluated thoroughly to avoid serious disasters after surgery.
